A deep dive into the Venus Series and its inspiration from classical sculpture.

The Venus Series represents our most ambitious exploration of classical forms reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Drawing inspiration from ancient sculpture while maintaining a distinctly modern sensibility, these pieces bridge millennia of artistic tradition.

When we first conceived the Venus Series, we spent months studying classical Greek and Roman sculpture. The flowing lines, the sense of movement captured in stone, the way light plays across curved surfaces—all of these elements informed our approach to working with clay.

From Stone to Clay

Translating the monumental presence of marble sculpture into the intimate scale of ceramic vessels presented unique challenges. We had to consider how the essential qualities of classical form—balance, proportion, grace—would translate to a different medium and scale.

The result is a collection that feels both ancient and contemporary. Each piece in the Venus Series features sweeping curves that echo the drapery of classical statuary, while the minimal, monochromatic glazes speak to modern design sensibilities.

Technical Innovation

Creating these forms required developing new throwing and hand-building techniques. The asymmetrical curves that define the Venus Series push the limits of what's possible with traditional wheel throwing, requiring a hybrid approach that combines multiple forming methods.

We're particularly proud of the surface treatment developed for this series. The matte finish, achieved through careful glaze formulation and firing, gives each piece a subtle tactile quality that invites touch while maintaining visual sophistication.
