The story behind our sculptural Horse Series and equine inspiration.
The Horse Series marks a departure from our primarily vessel-based work into the realm of pure sculpture. These pieces capture the grace, power, and spirit of the horse—an animal that has captivated artists throughout human history.
Our fascination with equine forms began during a visit to the caves of Lascaux, where prehistoric artists first recorded their observations of horses. That same impulse—to capture the essence of this magnificent animal—drives our contemporary interpretation.
Capturing Movement
The greatest challenge in creating the Horse Series was suggesting movement within a static medium. Horses are defined by their motion—the flowing mane, the powerful stride, the alert turn of the head. Translating these dynamic qualities into ceramic required careful study and countless iterations.
We worked from life, spending time with horses at a nearby stable, sketching and photographing to understand how their bodies move and how light plays across their forms. This direct observation informed every curve and contour of the final pieces.
Abstraction and Essence
Rather than pursuing literal representation, we chose to abstract the equine form to its essential elements. The result is a series that suggests rather than describes, leaving room for viewer interpretation while maintaining the unmistakable spirit of the horse.
The surface treatment of the Horse Series pieces emphasizes their sculptural qualities. Subtle variations in glaze thickness create areas of light and shadow that change throughout the day, giving each piece a dynamic presence despite its stillness.
